Report on Zonta International Convention in Gothenburg Sweden by Marlene Larson, President:

The 56th Biennial Zonta International Convention was held in Gothenburg, Sweden June 28th to July 4th, 2002.  Marlene Larson, 2002-2003 Brainerd Area Zonta Club president,  attended as a delegate.

It is exciting to meet and visit with women from around the world.  There was a  buzz during our breaks with many different languages being spoken.  Old friends meeting!  New friendships forming!  The Swedish clubs did a fine job of planning, executing and making us all feel welcome to this fine event.  There were nearly 2200 attending this convention.   The outgoing president, Mary McGee from Queensland, Australia conducted the meetings during the week.  The culmination of the week was the installation of the 2002-2004 president, Margit Webjorn from Trosa, Sweden - a small town south of Stockholm.  Also installed were the newly elected officers, directors and 31 governors from around the world.  The focus this biennium will be "Advancing the Status of Women" which is our mission statement.

Since 1919, Zonta members have worked to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women throughout the world.  This biennium, the generosity of Zontians, friends of the Zonta International Foundation and Zonta Clubs around the world made possible Foundation funding for:

12 Michael J. Freeman Scholarships to Irish women and funding for vocation training programs through the National Women's Council of Ireland  (a bequest)

bullet

51 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships to women from 19 countries (a bequest)

53 Young Women in Public Affairs Awards to young women from 17 countries

9 projects designed to reduce violence against women and children over the long-term

bullet

3 International Service Project in three countries: India, Nepal, Burkina Faso.

The most powerful part of the entire convention was the reports of the International Service projects.  Over 15,000 babies lives have been saved because of the Neonatal Tetanus elimination project in Nepal.  $350,000 is being spent to educate the communities of the 6,000 women per day being affected by female Genital Circumcision in Bukina Faso.  Another $395,000 is budgeted to work on eliminating  violence against women in India.  This will save many of the 120,000 women & girls being trafficked each year.  (8/02)

Heart Month recognized:  Kathy Bahma, local resident and a recipient of a heart transplant some five years ago spoke at our February Program meeting.  She recounted her experiences both before and after the transplant, and how important it is to know the signs of heart attack and heart disease. Symptoms of heart attack can be quite different from the classic symptoms experienced by most men.  Kathy's presentation was informative and inspiring.  (02/02)

Holiday Projects and Service: Nine Brainerd area Zontians  once again assisted the Salvation Army in it's annual holiday fundraising by ringing bells at the red kettle by K-Mart at the Westgate Mal on December 18th.  Additionally,  the service committee assembled and delivered 20 "shoeboxes" of toiletries and necessities to the women's shelter for distribution to arriving women in need.  This is an ongoing project and a purse sized list of needed items has been distributed to club members to use in purchasing items for the boxes during the year.  Cash donations can be made to the committee at anytime during the year to purchase items which are not donated. (12/01)

Thank You Letters Received:  Thank you letters were received in July for donations made from monies raised from the annual style show.  Port Group Homes will use their donation to take the girls on an outing to Duluth to visit the Glensheen Mansion, the Maritime Museum, and the Great Lakes Aquarium.  Many of these girls have never taken family vacations or day trips, so this is a special treat.  The Women's Center of Mid-Minnesota wrote that they will use our donation to replace a living room chair, as their furniture gets a lot of use from the many battered women and children who use the shelter every year. Thank you letters from Zonta International were also received.(9/01)

Project Haiti to be Supported: The Finance Committee recommended donating $500 from the style show proceeds to Project Haiti.  This donation will pay the salary for one teacher for one year, and generate a matching grant for the salary of a second teacher for one year.  Members enthusiastically approved the recommendation at the June Business Meeting. Subsequently, we were notified in September, that funding a teacher is difficult, but that we could use the money to fund a one year's tuition for five girls @ $100 each.  Haiti does not have government sponsored education, so tuition payment is required for any education at all. Club members voted to support the change in designation. (6/01), (9/01)

Report on Zonta International Hawaii Convention (July 8-13,2000-from Dr. Carol Munns, club president):  Lois Laurence and I recently returned from attending the 55th International  Zonta Convention in Hawaii.  It was truly a marvelous and inspiring experience to join with over 2000 Zontians (71 countries) from all over the world, many attired in their native dress.  We took many pictures which we will share with you at a later meeting.  Kay Cottee's keynote address was outstanding.  Kay was the first woman to sail around the world unassisted.  We heard from Michelle Brekke, NASA's Flight Manager at Johnson Space Center in Houston.  She was a recipient of the Amelia Earhart Scholarship in the past and is on a short list to become an astronaut.  Dr. Catherine Hamlin also spoke of her life in Ethiopia where she and her husband build the Fistula Hospital where they have spent their lives treating girls and women.  Her story was heart wrenching.  I will update you on the business at a future meeting.  Both Lois and I enjoyed interacting with Zontians from the USA and around the world.  We have wonderful memories and lots of "exchange pins".  Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your delegates.(7/00)
